Why Is My Boiler Making a Loud Humming Noise?

Boilers aren’t the quietest types of heating systems available, but there are certain noises that do indicate a problem is brewing. One of those noises is a loud humming noise. This is not a normal sound during healthy boiler operation, and you will want to check the system thoroughly to ensure you don’t have a problem. At T.E. Spall & Son, we want to help you get to the bottom of any boiler problems you’re having, including noisy operation. Below, we’ve listed three common problems that can cause a loud humming noise to come from your boiler.

1. Loose Components

If any components in your boiler have worked their way loose, you may notice that loud humming noise. This occurs when the components vibrate against other parts of your boiler. The fix is fairly simple, but if you neglect to schedule a repair service, the loose parts could cause additional, more costly damage to your boiler.

2. High Pressure

If your boiler is making that high humming noise, check the water pressure. If it’s too high, it could contribute to the noise. Remember, a boiler that’s working as it should will never have a pressure higher than 15 psi. In most cases, this is not an emergency. Boilers are equipped with pressure relief valves that will handle this for you. However, if you’re noticing an ongoing problem with high pressure in your boiler, try turning the heating and water off. This should put the pressure back down to normal levels. For chronic high pressure problems, contact a professional for help.

3. Circulating Pump Set Too Fast

Your boiler’s circulating pump moves the heated water from the boiler to the radiator and back again. If it is set too fast for the system, then you will notice vibrations and a loud humming noise. To check for this, look for the circulating pump and check its speed settings. Then, reduce the speed and see if that stops the humming noise. If it does and the boiler continues to heat the home properly, then leave the system at the lower speed. If this doesn’t solve the problem, or reducing the speed reduces the heat and comfort in your home, you’ll need to schedule a professional heating repair service.
