When to Replace Your Furnace?Posted On: January 14, 2016
Owning a house can bring a lot of expenses and many of these can be unexpected. When it comes to your heating unit, there are a few things you need to know about replacing your furnace.
Signs That It Is Time for Furnace Repair
The best time to replace your furnace is before it breaks in the middle of winter. Sometimes this happens without any signs from your current furnace; but often there are things that you can look for that will help you know that your furnace is on its way out.
- Age – If your furnace is more than 15 years old you may want to look into replacing it. Often after 5 – 10 years the technology used in your current furnace will be outdated, this means that a 15-year-old furnace—while it still may seem to run fine—could be costing you a lot of money when it comes to your energy bills.
- Rising Repair Costs – If you find that you are spending a lot of money on repairing an old furnace and you feel like you are always on the phone to the heating and cooling company, it may be time for a new furnace.
- Increasing Energy Costs – If your energy costs seem to be on the rise and adjusting the thermostat or using your heating less is not helping, this likely means that your current system has to work harder to keep up with your home’s heating needs.
- Decreased Comfort – If your thermostat is saying 68 but your home feels like an igloo, the problem could be that your older furnace just cannot heat your home anymore.
Knowing When to Call For Furnace Repair
If you are experiencing any of the above signs you still may be wondering if it is worth spending the money to install a new unit. This is a fair question, that 15-year-old unit could run for another 5 years or you could get more repairs and maybe your system will work well again.
A good thing to take into consideration is the money you are spending on getting your current system to work properly as well as the increased amounts you are paying on your energy bills. These amounts could go into paying off a new system and you could enjoy a comfortable home and less stress knowing that your system is not about to break down on you.
