Oil Furnaces in Northeastern Pennsylvania

A Leading Furnace Company in Scranton & Wilkes-Barre

Oil furnaces are one of the oldest forms of what many would consider a modern heating technology.  When first introduced, oil furnaces were a huge step forward in efficiency and convenience compared to dirty coal and wood burning furnaces.  With the introduction of natural gas and electric furnaces that made further advances in efficiency, cost, and cleanliness it was thought that oil furnaces may be largely pushed out of the new furnace market. Instead, oil furnaces have continued to evolve and remain an efficient and environmentally friendly method of home heating today.

How Do Oil Furnaces Work?

Forced air oil furnaces burn oil stored in a holding container as a fuel source to produce heat that is blown into your home with a fan. The oil in the holding container is fed into a combustion chamber where the fuel is then atomized and ignited with high-voltage electrodes. Once ignited, the exhaust goes to the exhaust chamber where it is moved into the home with a forced air fan.

What Are the Advantages of an Oil Furnace?

There are several advantages to installing an oil furnace to heat your home. Oil furnaces are known for their longevity, efficiency, safety, and cost. Together, these advantages make oil furnaces an excellent choice for heating your home.

Oil Furnace Lifespan

Oil furnaces have a long lifespan and generally need little maintenance other than routine changing of the filter. Oil furnaces typically come with a 10-year warranty, but this should not be taken as an indication that the unit will last only 10 years. It is not uncommon for an oil furnace system to last for 15 to 20 years or more with proper care and routine maintenance.

Oil Furnace Efficiency

Oil furnaces are one of the most efficient ways to generate heat for your home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, oil furnaces have an efficiency rating (known as the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE) of 83 percent. This means 83 percent of the fuel’s energy is converted directly to heat.

Oil Furnace Safety

Unlike natural gas fired furnaces, oil furnaces do not produce carbon monoxide during combustion. The oil used in an oil furnace burns cleanly with very little smoke or soot residue and the exhaust is not released into the atmosphere. Additionally, furnace oil is not susceptible to explosion like natural gas if exposed to an open flame.

Oil Furnace Operation Cost

Although heating costs can vary by geographic area, heating oil is commonly an inexpensive way to heat your home. Some oil furnaces can even burn a blend of petroleum and bio oils that will further reduce the cost – and the impact on the environment.
